Embark on the inspiring journey of Rachel Bladon, a prolific author and devoted community advocate whose legacy reverberates through the pages of more than 80 educational books. Born in Radlett, Hertfordshire, Rachel dedicated her 30-year career to reaching tens of thousands of English students worldwide, leaving an indelible impact on language education.
Rachel's literary prowess shone under her maiden name, Rachel Bladon, as she crafted graded readers that spanned all age groups and embraced diverse genres, from non-fiction to retellings of modern and classic works. Notable titles such as White Fang (2008), Mulan (2017), and The Life and Diaries of Anne Frank (2018) stood as testaments to her skill, each receiving the esteemed ERF (Extensive Reading Foundation) Language Learner Literature award.
In 2014, Rachel assumed the role of Series Editor for the Oxford Bookworms Library, where she added her touch to the collection with five titles, including adaptations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Eat, Pray, Love, along with the Factfile Japan. Her leadership not only maintained the library's hallmark of fine storytelling and rigorous grading but also expanded its offerings with exciting new titles.
Rachel's journey began at North London Collegiate school and continued at Somerville College, Oxford, where she studied modern history and developed her passion for the written word as the news editor of Cherwell, the student newspaper. Fluent in French, she ventured to Grenoble after Oxford, teaching English before starting a career in book publishing at Usborne Books and later at Heinemann in their English Language Teaching (ELT) Division.
Her life took a global turn when, in 1996, Rachel married Andrew Foakes, and the couple spent three years in Hong Kong. Rachel established herself as a freelance commissioning and managing editor while immersing themselves in the cultures of Southeast Asia. In 2016, the family, including their three children, Grace, Anna, and Frank, settled in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.
Rachel's commitment to community service was evident in her proactive response to the challenges posed by Covid-19. She initiated a "help your neighbor" scheme and volunteered as a vaccinator, showcasing her deep sense of care for others. Elected to the town council in 2021 and later appointed as deputy mayor in 2022, Rachel continued her service by producing council newsletters, conducting Saturday surgeries, and volunteering as a teacher to Ukrainian families.
Rachel Bladon's life was a harmonious blend of practical action and caring intelligence. She is survived by her husband, Andrew, their children, and her mother. Rachel’s father passed away shortly after her. Her legacy lives on not only through the pages of her books but in the hearts of those she touched through her dedication to education and community well-being.
