John Escott, Writer 
John Escott, born on July 4, 1944, in Reigate, Surrey, was a versatile and accomplished writer known for his contributions to literature, particularly in the field of educational books. He initially embarked on his literary journey by creating children's books and comic scripts, showcasing his early passion for storytelling. As his career evolved, he transitioned to writing and adapting books tailored for students of all ages.
Escott's affinity for crime and mystery thrillers became evident in his work, and he gained recognition as a member of the British Crime Writers Association. His diverse literary repertoire reflects his commitment to engaging readers across various genres.
Education played a pivotal role in shaping Escott's early years. He attended St Chad’s Cathedral School in Lichfield, where he contributed to the cathedral choir, and later pursued his education at Worksop College in Nottinghamshire. In 1963, he enrolled at Fitzwilliam College with an initial focus on Music. However, after two years, he shifted his academic path to Law. During his time at Fitzwilliam, he actively participated in the college's musical activities, serving as Secretary and later Treasurer of the College Music Society. He also conducted the Chapel Choir and played the French horn in the National Music Orchestra.
In 1971, Escott took on the role of Director of Music at Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith. His dedication to music education extended beyond the school, as he collaborated with Latymer Upper School to establish a parents’ and students’ choral society, a joint orchestra, and an annual orchestral exchange program with a school in Hamburg. Additionally, he served as the organist and choirmaster at Hammersmith parish church, and later at Kensington United Reformed Church, where he also assumed the position of church secretary.
John Escott's prolific career as an author for Oxford University Press includes notable contributions to various series such as "Oxford Bookworms Factfile," "Oxford Bookworms Library," "Hotshot Puzzles," and "Dominoes." Some of his works for these series include titles like "London," "Agatha Christie, Woman of Mystery," "Star Reporter," "The Scarlet Letter," and "A Pretty Face."
Tragically, John Escott passed away on January 6, 2018, following a recurrence of leukemia. His legacy endures through his contributions to literature and music education, leaving a lasting impact on readers and students around the world.
