My Rogue to Ruin

The riotous Wynchester family has taken on a new case to expose a forger, but the prime suspect isn't at all what he seems in this captivating Regency romp from a New York Times bestselling author. Marjorie Wynchester has always let her siblings take the lead when it comes to planning their investigations. But someone in London is trying to pass off counterfeits, and this time she's the only one with the skill needed to find the culprit. Soon, all the evidence leads her straight to Lord Adrian Webb. Adrian is a roguish scoundrel of the first order, but he never meant to get caught up in a forgery scheme. Especially one that’s snowballed out of control. Now a blackmailer is out to ruin him, and the most alluring woman he's ever met is trying to put him behind bars. Every time Marjorie thinks she has Adrian figured out, her assumptions turn on their head. He’s a heartless scoundrel. A loyal brother. A smooth liar. A good kisser. Er…wait… Is winning her affections just one more attempt to avoid the law? Or is it possible he’s not such a rogue after all?

A Whirlwind of Romance and Intrigue

Erica Ridley's "My Rogue to Ruin" takes readers on a captivating journey through Regency England, where a whirlwind of romance, intrigue, and witty banter unfolds. This fourth book in the "Wild Wynchesters" series follows the story of Marjorie Wynchester, a sharp and independent woman, as she encounters the enigmatic Lord Adrian Webb, a charming rogue caught in a web of deceit.

Unveiling Secrets and Hidden Agendas:

Marjorie, known for her keen intellect and talent for forging, finds herself entangled in a dangerous game. She is tasked with infiltrating a notorious pawn shop, suspected of harboring a counterfeiting ring. As she delves deeper into the investigation, she crosses paths with Adrian, a man shrouded in mystery and harboring secrets of his own. Their paths intertwine as they work together to uncover the truth, navigating a landscape of danger, betrayal, and hidden agendas.

Beyond the Facade:

Ridley skillfully creates characters that are both captivating and multifaceted. Marjorie, despite her outwardly strong persona, harbors vulnerabilities that gradually surface throughout the story. Adrian, initially portrayed as a carefree rogue, reveals hidden depths and complexities as the narrative progresses. This depth of characterization adds emotional weight and fosters a genuine connection between the protagonists.

A Perfect Blend of Genres:

"My Rogue to Ruin" cleverly blends elements of historical romance, mystery, and adventure. The Regency setting is vividly portrayed, transporting readers to a world of elegant balls, social intrigue, and hidden dangers. The mystery element keeps the story engaging, as clues unfold and secrets are gradually revealed. And the blossoming romance between Marjorie and Adrian adds a touch of sweetness and emotional intensity to the narrative.

Strengths:

  • Compelling characters: The protagonists are well-developed and relatable, with distinct personalities and hidden vulnerabilities.
  • Fast-paced plot: The story unfolds at a satisfying pace, keeping readers engaged with its blend of mystery, romance, and adventure.
  • Vivid setting: The Regency period is vividly brought to life through detailed descriptions and historical accuracy.
  • Witty dialogue: The characters engage in witty banter that adds humor and charm to the narrative.

Weaknesses:

  • Potential for predictability: The basic plot structure may fall into familiar tropes for seasoned romance readers.
  • Series dependence: While the story can be enjoyed as a standalone, readers might benefit from having read previous installments in the series for a deeper understanding of the characters and their relationships.

Overall Impression:

"My Rogue to Ruin" is a delightful and entertaining read that will appeal to fans of historical romance, mystery, and Regency England. Ridley's captivating storytelling, charming characters, and well-balanced plot make this book an enjoyable and engaging journey. It's a perfect choice for readers looking for a lighthearted escape with a touch of intrigue and a dash of romance.

Recommendation: Highly recommended for readers who enjoy historical romance novels with strong female characters, intriguing mysteries, and humorous dialogue. It's also a good choice for fans of the "Wild Wynchesters" series.

My Rogue to Ruin by Erica Ridley
The Wild Wynchesters series #4. Historical romance. Disability. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series as family from prior stores cross over and play minor parts in this book.
Lord Adrian Webb decides to stop creating forgeries with one last sale but the middleman finds out he has been getting the forgeries rather than originals to sell. Adrian finds himself being held hostage and forced to create counterfeit money that’s going to hurt the locals and make the middleman rich. He creates imperfect coin molds on purpose but so far is still locked up against his will.
The Wynchester family has traced the fake coins and allowed Marjorie to take the lead in planning the undercover work to expose the culprit. But the more time she spends with Adrian, the more she likes him and she realizes that he’s not the bad guy even though he is the forger.

Fun antics and amusing family adventures as Majorie brings all their tricks into play on her first time leading the caper. Her confidence grows as she realizes her hearing isn’t what’s lacking in her investigation and she has to deal with her attraction to the flirty Adrian. Of course, she must still catch the bad guy and help the victims recover, so her plate is full. Good thing she has family to help.
Enjoyable with a few laugh out loud moments that will have me remembering this series for a long time.

Erica Ridley is one of my favorite historical romance authors; this is the third book in the series and, sadly, my least favorite. I had a hard time getting through this one at the start; some of the comments the MC said to the other MC bothered me. I struggled to make my way through, but after the halfway point, the book started to pick up and become more enjoyable. The mystery and the heist made it for me and were worth it in the end. If historical fiction is not your cup of tea, I suggest the first two in the series over this one. This won't be for everyone, but I did enjoy it in the end.

Tropes:
- Forced Promoitity
- A Heist
- Opposites Attract

Arc received from the publisher; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Wynchesters do amazing things everyday” is the family motto and Erica Ridley writes amazing stories. Marjorie is the sister with an artists soul and a hearing problem. Adrian is a Marquess second son who finds himself trapped by a mobster. This story is hilarious and fun from start to finish. With delightful human and animal characters, readers will get lost in the myriad of antics. Reading this page turner as Marjorie and Adrian fall in love will truly be entertaining for readers. It is amazing the new and interesting capers the family can devise. This book is a must buy for every shelf.
