A Night of Betrayal and Deception

Carissa Ann Lynch’s thriller, “The Traitors”, masterfully captures the essence of a classic locked-room mystery with a modern twist. With a setting that chills the spine and characters whose dark secrets unravel as the night progresses, Lynch’s novel takes readers on a gripping journey through deceit, fear, and survival.

A Mysterious Invitation

The story kicks off with six seemingly ordinary people each receiving a mysterious, thick cream envelope. Inside is an invitation to spend 24 hours at Beechwood Castle, a crumbling mansion with a horrific past, and a chance to win a portion of one million dollars. The premise is tantalizing: a decrepit castle known for one of the most brutal murders in modern history, where the smell of blood, decay, and death still hangs heavily in the air.

The Chilling Setting of Beechwood Castle

The atmospheric setting of Rock Hill, Southern Indiana, is one of the novel’s standout elements. Lynch describes the picturesque yet trauma-laden small town so vividly that readers feel immersed in its haunting presence. Beechwood Castle, with its gothic architecture and dark history, serves as the perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama. It’s not just a location; it’s a character in its own right, holding secrets that could determine the fate of its new visitors.

Flawed and Untrustworthy Characters

The six characters—Staci, the true-crime podcaster; Lolly, the sole survivor of the massacre; Cornelius, the out-of-work architect; Penelope, the washed-up author; Bonnie, out on parole; and Rad, the disgraced police officer—each bring their own baggage to the castle. They are deeply flawed, with some verging on unlikeable, but this adds to the intrigue. Their horrendous personalities leap off the pages, making readers question their motives and trustworthiness.

What is compelling about these characters is how their past actions and secrets interconnect. Each has something to hide, and their interactions are charged with suspicion and tension. Lynch expertly crafts these dynamics, ensuring that readers are kept on edge, constantly reevaluating who might be the imposter and who could be the killer.

A Narrative of Suspense and Twists

The narrative structure of “The Traitors” is particularly effective, with multiple points of view allowing readers to delve into the minds of each character. This approach not only builds suspense but also provides a deeper understanding of their fears, desires, and motivations. As the night progresses and the characters' true natures are revealed, the tension mounts, leading to a series of shocking twists.

One of the most significant strengths of the book is its ability to surprise. Just when readers think they have figured out the mystery, Lynch throws in a plot twist that upends everything. The unpredictability of the storyline is one of its greatest appeals, keeping readers hooked until the very end.

The Downside: Character Development

Despite its strengths, “The Traitors” is not without flaws. Some characters feel underdeveloped, their backstories and motivations not fully fleshed out. This disparity in character development can make parts of the narrative feel uneven, with certain characters standing out more vividly than others. However, this does not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the book, as the fast-paced plot and atmospheric setting compensate for these shortcomings.

A Bizarre but Thrilling Conclusion

The ending of “The Traitors” is both bizarre and thought-provoking. While some readers may find it far-fetched, it undeniably leaves a lasting impression. Lynch’s decision to take the plot into unexpected territory adds to the book’s unique charm, ensuring that it is not easily forgotten.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, “The Traitors” by Carissa Ann Lynch is a thrilling and atmospheric novel that will appeal to fans of locked-room mysteries and psychological thrillers. Its blend of suspense, dark secrets, and unexpected twists make it a compelling read. While some aspects of character development could be improved, the overall experience is gripping and entertaining. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, chilling read that keeps you guessing until the last page, “The Traitors” is definitely worth picking up.

In Southern Indiana, lies Beechwood Castle - a derelict manor on forty acres of woodland. The 'Castle' has had a macabre and gruesome history going back centuries...

Six local people receive the following invitation:

"You are cordially invited to Beechwood Castle on November 9th, 2023 for night you'll never forget. You are invited to stay one night, as our guest. If you follow the rules and complete the night, you will receive your one-sixth share of one million dollars."

The six (who were required to sign legal documents agreeing not to sue if they get injured or killed, documents that waived all of their rights to privacy, and that promised they wouldn't say anything about their experiences until the 'stay' was over):

Staci - a twenty-something social media influencer who hosts a YouTube channel discussing cold cases of missing and murdered women. She has no steady job, has mental health issues, and lives with her brother and her sister-in-law. When she arrives at the 'Castle' her actions come across as rather gauche.

Lolly - is the only survivor of the 1996 Beechwood Castle massacre, in which three of her teenage friends were brutally murdered with an axe. Now she is a forty-something single mother to a thirteen year old girl, who cares for her dementia ridden father and works at Home Depot.

Bonnie - a psychic and ex-convict. She was convicted of fraud and drug charges which resulted in her daughter being taken into care when she was just an infant. Bonnie has had no contact with her daughter for over two decades.

Penelope - a sixty-nine year old writer of true crime novels whose career has been on the decline for some time. Though wealthy and happily married, she longs for the literary recognition she feels she is entitled to. She comes across and curt, sarcastic and unpleasant.

Cornelius - an architect who lost his job after being jailed for 'perversion'. His marriage is circling the drain and he is the father of two boys.

Rad - a retired widower, and disgraced fifty-something policeman. He lost his job years ago, when he was accused of killing the man suspected of killing those three teens at Beechwood Castle in 1996. He seeks closure...

Permeated with a sinister sense of menace, the narrative follows the six invitees as they accept the challenge in order to win the lucrative financial prize. Facts about the six are slowly revealed. Chilling discoveries follow... With a finale that would make a great movie denouement, "The Traitors" will titillate and engross readers looking for a brief escape via the written word.

I'm uncertain as to why the title was chosen. I could not unearth any hints in the novel as to why the participants were 'traitors'.

The novel reads like a cross between an Agatha Christie mystery and a farcical horror story. With lots of violent deaths, some black humour, and characters that you as the reader are not heavily invested in, the book was an enjoyable romp. The type of story you'd tell around a campfire perhaps... or, the type of book perfect for reading in late October.

The Traitors has some similarities to the popular TV show of the same name, but there are a few differences. The story is atmospheric and creepy. It takes place in an old deteriorating mansion on the edge of the woods. It has been vacant for decades. Teenagers would enter the gloomy, old house to hang out or on a dare. This ended in 1996 when three young people were hacked to death by an unknown person wielding an axe. One teenage girl managed to hide and survived the gruesome murders. The mansion and its grounds have been locked since the crime, and people have been barred from entry.

The abandoned property has been sold, and six people have been invited to spend the night. If they manage to do so, they will win a substantial amount of money; if they choose to leave, their money will be forfeited. The new owner and person who sent the invitations had not been divulged. Invitations have been sent to a diverse group of people. There is the 'final girl' from the 1996 slaughter. A young woman with a true crime show on YouTube was caught posting fake information. An older woman was famous for writing true crime thrillers, but her years of success were behind her. Another woman went to prison for fraudulent psychic readings, and her child was taken from her. Also invited was an architect whose reputation was ruined due to sleazy sexual behaviour. A former policeman accidentally shot and killed a young suspect for the axe murders. Some attending are fearful, others are excited, but all intend to endure the night for the lure of the monetary prize. There is also a paid female moderator to explain the house rules.

Any of these overnight guests could be designated traitors, but who is the suggested impostor? The book's first part explores why each person may have been invited, their state of mind, and their interactions with the others. The action and fear pick up when two are found murdered by an axe. One of the guests has a gun. Scenes proceed at a frantic pace. As the characters remained mainly unlikeable, engaging with them or being concerned about their outcomes was difficult. As a result, suspense and tension were diminished, and scenes were overly dramatic.
You might be disappointed if you attempted to study the clues to guess who was causing the chaos. There was a big twist that revealed the identity of the person who committed the past and present killings and their motivation. The reveal seemed more like a cheat than a twist, but it made sense.
I liked that in this locked-room scenario, the weaknesses and flaws of the characters were known early in the story and not until after the crimes had occurred. This was a quick and easy read, and the flawed characters made it entertaining. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. The book is due on February 1st.

The book is only 270 pages, so for a thriller it is short but it's ideal I'd you're looking for a short read.
🪓🩸
On the surface this book has everything I usually love. A small town American setting, characters living in each other's pockets - knowing all their darkest secrets, murder, mystery, plot twists, an ominous castle that dominates the story and a past that still haunts the residents to this day.
🪓🩸
This book has a multiple point of view narrative. We are introduced to six characters who have each recieved a mysterious invitation to attend Beechwood Castle with a chance to win a portion of one million dollars. All six characters are so incredibly flawed and unlikeable and their horrendous personalities leap off the pages of their dedicated chapters.

What I absolutely loved was the atmospheric setting of Rock Hill, Southern Indiana. This small town setting, this picturesque intimate place with so much trauma at its core. I was fully immersed and I felt like I was really there, it is excellently written. After this however, things started to go downhill...
🪓🩸
What I didn't like is the disparity in character development. Some are so under developed, they may as well not exist. I didn't guess the plot twist which was HUGE, but it also seemed very random? In fact, the longer the book went on, the more ridiculous and far fetched it got. And the ending? Just plain bizarre to me.
🪓🩸
I love fiction but I would at least like the events that I am reading about to be somewhat believable.
Yes this is a negative review, but it's an honest one and it's unrealistic to think that we will enjoy every book that we read and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
